Comments:
I have recently wrote a book called " I DIDN'T BELONG " and feel it can be of benefit to others.
Below is a synopsis,
The book titled " I DIDN'T BELONG " offers the personal memoirs of a man who has overcome much adversity in order to move forward with his life.
In " I DIDN'T BELONG " recollections are recorded as a narrative journal in which he details the memories of his violent childhood with an abusive father while his mother struggled to make a better life for her sons. Due to their Gypsy heritage, the family was treated as social outcasts and the boys were shuffled between Gypsy encampments, the homes of various family members and foster homes.
As a teen, he fell into a life of crime eventually ending up in prison where he sustained numerous beatings and a rampant prejudice. After a failed marriage and years spent as an alcoholic and drug addict, Mr Cook joined Walkley Baptist Church and dedicated his life to God.
Throughout " I DIDN'T BELONG " vivid images coalesce to create a text that is intended to be both introspective and informative. Furthermore, his careful description of his struggles may be of interest to the reader who is dealing with similar challenges or some that is helping someone through the same.
The book “ I Didn’t Belong ” ISBN 1-84549-043-6 is available direct from www.arimapublishing.co.uk
amazon.co.uk and com. It is also distributed in the U.K from Gardners or Bertrams, and Ingram or Baker & Taylor in the USA, or can be ordered from any good book store.
Yours in Jesus' name

Comments: My grandparents, James & Isabelle Wood were attending the Arbroath Town Mission Centre just prior to them emigrating to Australia in 1957. My mum says that Pop was in charge of the Missions to Seaman. I came to Scotland with my grandparents in 1982 and was in Arbroath with them and by chance caught up with Bob Clapham and his wife. We were fortunate enough to stay overnight as their guests.
Could you please pass on this message to let Mr Clapham know that my grandparents are still both alive and living in Brisbane, Queensland. They are 88 and 90 now and in reasonable health for their ages. Pop still occasionally preaches at the Presbytarian Church he attends and two of my sons were fortunate to hear their great grandfather preach for possibly the only time in their lives as we live on the west coast of Australia and only get to visit every two years.
I will be seeing my grandparents next month and will be letting them know that I have sent this message and any messages I get in reply. No doubt I will be spending many hours with them reminiscing. As you will appreciate every time I say goodbye it might be the last time I see them on this side of eternity.
I hope you reply to my email.
God's richest blessings to you.
regards
Carlene Haagensen

Comments: In the late 1950's, one Sharon Lee Anderson of 2343 38th Street of Rock Island, Illinois USA corresponded with one Maureen Fairweather whose address was Sheriff's Court House, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland. I know Maureen married at age 18 (or so) and I believe she taught school. She sent me heather, the Andersen Tartan and a broach with an antlered deer within a circle.
I'm now 57 and finally traveling to the UK. Because of those long-ago letters, my husband and I will make a trip to Arbroath around September 14th or 15th. Even though 45 years has passed, I'd like to be able to say hello to my pen pal. I realize that without her married last name, I probably cannot find her, but perhaps someone at her postal address will remember her family and have a contact for her.
Thank you in advance for any efforts you are able to make.

Comments: Hello Wilma & Bob
Just thought I would send you some info that might be of use to you or someone you know. I have been doing a bible study course over the last 12 months or so at the online bible college. The college is based in Australia but has students from all over the world, approx.1775 at last count,I believe there are about 57 students from the U.K. so as you can see distance is not a problem for this course. The studies are very very good. Students can study at there own pace and can adjust the pace of their studies to suit there situation at any given time. As from around the end of MARCH 2002, the college dropped all fees and the biblical studies course is now FREE TO ALL.In fact all their studies/courses are now free. There are no catches, the college principal told us they felt this was the way the Lord was leading them. The college staff are very supportive and helpfull. If you or anyone else are interested in further information the college can be veiwed at www.online-bible-college.com

Dear Dr Clapham ,
My name is Andrew Dempsey. I have a small but increasing itinerant preaching ministry in central Scotland this tends to be among Brethren Assemblies and some independent evangelical churches. As God leads, I am seeking to increase this into Churches where thus far I have no direct link.
Recently I was listening to Ray Bevan teaching on bringing a vision to birth and he said that to do this you have to push. I took this as a word from God to push gently some new doors of ministry to see if they would open.
As a result of this I have been contacting churches that I have had no connection with to see if there is any opportunity of ministry. I appreciate how strange this may seem and I know how dangerous it is to open pulpits to strangers.
It is not my desire to push myself but I am trying to follow God lead. I am in full time employment with the Church of Scotland board of social responsibility and as such am always able to meet my own costs and would not seek to burden any fellowship. It is simply my desire to serve God by preaching his word.
Doctrinally I would be firmly Evangelical believing the bible to be inspired, inerrant and the final authority in all matters of faith and practice. I would hold firmly to the historical creeds and statements of faith common to all Evangelical churches.
My testimony is that I was converted from a non Christian home when I was 14 through the ministry of Billy Graham. I was Baptised in water at Riverside Evangelical Church in Ayr and later had the opportunity to go to Bible School at Gospel Literature Outreach in Motherwell. After which I worked full-time for the Lord at G.L.O before working for a time as youth worker at Calvary Christian Fellowship in Motherwell.
For a number of years up until last year I had my own business selling children's clothes but I have always been active in my church, preaching and witnessing as opportunity arose. As I have said earlier, in the last year or so God has been opening up different opportunities to serve him in preaching in mainly Brethren churches but I have a desire to serve the whole Body of Christ. Therefore if I can be of any service to your fellowship or if you would like more information let me know.
I have sent this E-mail with the full support and blessing of my Elders at Viewpark Christian Fellowship and the appropriate recommendations can be obtained from Colin McPhie or Stephen McQoid. Their phone numbers are.
01698 814542 ( Colin )
01698 812967 ( Stephen )
May God bless your church and all its ministries..
Yours in the Lord,
Andy Dempsey

Will be starting work with an Edinburgh firm of solicitors called Shepherd and Wedderburn WS in August. They are a large commercial firm based in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. Some good opportunities should be coming up. Keep doing what you are doing up in Arbroath. You may or may not be surprised to learn this, but the Mission gave me the moral and spiritual strength which has helped me get by these last few years. Thank you for that.

Comments: Hi folks,
Just a quick note to say congratulations to Bob Clapham on reaching 50 years at the Arbroath Town mission. Most people are slowing or stopped at your age Bob, but you seem to be getting stronger, well done. Bob I think part of your success is that you are so approachable and genuine, not a quality found in many these days.I check the Mission web site from time to time and it is great to see that things seem to be going so well, you have a great program of events.I would love to have been there but it is a long way from Melbourne Australia to Arbroath. We will be thinking of you on the night. All the best Bob, hope the celebrations go well on the 15th July 2000. As Cath said all the family wish you all the very best on the night and for your future plans.

Comments: Dear Wilma
Remember me! A blast from the past!
Just wanted to take an opportunity to send our congratulations to 'Uncle Bob' for his 50th anniversary at the Arbroath Town Mission.
The Arbroath Town Mission holds a special place in our hearts and in our past. I have no doubt it affected our future in many positive ways. We spent our teenage years there and have so many great memories.
The Town Mission to us is Bob Clapham and the dedication of both him and Mrs Clapham (whom we knew as Auntie Isa)was so appreciated by the Jaap family who now reside in Australia.
Helen Jaap, Ian, Cath, Ray & Lorraine send their love, best wishes and deepest respects to you Uncle Bob. (John Jaap would too if he were still alive believe me!)
CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN ON A WONDERFUL 50 YEARS AND ALL THE BEST ON JULY 15th 2000. WISH WE COULD BE THERE TO HELP YOU ALL CELEBRATE.
Cath Millar (Nee Cathy Jaap)
And remember ... you are not equal ... you are unique
Just like everybody else!
Have a great day!

Comments: I spotted your site when browsing to-night. I remember Bob Clapham when I sang with the SFMVP in the 50's and 60's. I remember a SFMVP weekend in Arbroath in the early 60's. Bob, do you remember the SFMVP tours of N.E. USA and Ontario, Canada with J,McR. in '65 &'68. I was with both Tours, but had emigrated to Canada in '66. J.McR wrote and asked me to accompany the Choir in '68 and I was delighted to accept. When I came to Canada I joined up with the newly formed Canadian FMVP but had to "retire" because of illness in '82. Give my regards & greetings to Bill Rodger and any others of the SFMVP who remember me. I used to sing 1st. Tenor with Willie Robertson, John Topping, Jim Buchanan, Geo. Freckleton and others whose names I have forgotten. I know the latter two are now with the Lord. I also sang with the Victoria Hall M.V. Choir, Glasgow. I remember Bob, you singing some of the verses of "Like Men that Wait" with John Frew. Keep up the Good WorkBob and God bless. Frank.

Will you remember please Donald and Margaret Esplan of Arbroath in your collective prayers. Donald is very seriously ill and Margaret is his support. They are members of St. Andrew's, Arbroath and Rev. Fair and his team are a great spiritual support to them. Anyhow, it just seemed appropriate to share this on a Christian web.

Comments: My daughter, Julia, is visiting Diana Stuart and her family in Arbroath this summer. I was just looking at sites on Arbroath on the Internet. Sounds like there are good opportunities for Christian fellowship there.

Comments: I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know Arbroath had a mission centre as such, although I went there on holiday every year (sometimes twice a year) from the time I was 4 until maybe 2 or 3 years ago (I am 17). It is a beautiful town! I hope your ministry is richly blessed.
Did the mission centre have anything to do with the kid's Christian events, beside the swimming pool at the beach that I know were held a *few* years ago? Whether your group or another Christian group was involved, I don't know but I used to go when I was at the paddling pool with my family on holiday. It was my earliest contact with Christians, and alongside my first veturing into a church when I was 8, prepared the ground in my life for the gospel to take root and me to come to faith. I have been a Christian now 4 years, and though there was a gap of some time between going to the thing at Arbroath as a v. young child and coming to faith, I feel it did the prepare the way in a sense, as I was from an unchurched (nominal protestant) background. I am actually involved now (past 2 years) with a weekly "playpeace church" run in my home church, St Columba's in Foxbar, Paisley, by YWAM. It caters for a wider age range, 4-12, but the difficulties and disencouragements must be similar - we might see things happening sometimes, but in the long term we will maybe never know which if any of the children we work with will accept Christ.
Anyway, sorry for the long guestbook entry and everything! Still, I only wanted to say that if your group was involved at all, or knows those who were involved in the group that met beside the paddling pool, I want to pass on my heartfelt thanks. The group, at my early age, prepared a road at least in part, for Christ to eventually enter into my life. So, there you go :)

Comments: I spent the month of July 1942 in Arbroath on a commando course. I was with the Royal Canadian Air Force, stationed at Dyce airdrome just outside of Aberdeen. As an airframe mechanic at the time I have often wondered since
then why I, along with boys from the Army and Navy, were taking a Commando Course. We were taught how to fire a Sten gun, a Lewis machine gun, how to throw a hand grenade and learned the art of camouflage. My RCAF buddy, Bunk Bowden, and I enjoyed our stay in Arbroath. The local people were
friendly and we enjoyed the cold North Sea where we went swimming a couple of times. I think the swimming pools were close because of war time regulations. I have quite a number of snapshots of various points of interest around Arbroath, including Arbroath Abbey, Bell Rock Lighthouse, Mausoleum,
Western Cemetery and the Kiddies Paddling Pool and of another Bathing Pool. As I mentioned before, I, along with other young men of the army and navy wondered why we were assigned to what was then called a "Commando Course". I have enjoed my present visit to Arbroath, after 58 years.

I have been interested in possible ministry opportunities in rural Scottland since my first visit in 1996. I am a home-missionary here in the USA with an orginization called Village Missions, we serve in churchs in rural and sub-urban America were there is a definate need to win people to Jesus Christ. I welcome any correspondence.
